Course Overview & Pacing
With 3 hours per week, it typically takes:
A1-A2: ~60–80 hours each (approx. 5–7 months per level).
B1-B2: ~120–150 hours each (approx. 10–12 months per level).
🟢 Level A1: Discovery (The Basics)
Goal: Survive basic daily interactions and introduce yourself.
Grammar: Present tense of être, avoir, and regular -er verbs; definite/indefinite articles; basic negation (ne... pas); gender of nouns.
Vocabulary: Greetings, numbers 0–100, colors, family, food, and telling time.
Key Competencies:
Ordering a coffee or croissant.
Filling out a simple form (name, address, nationality).
Asking for directions.
🟡 Level A2: Intermediate (The Survivalist)
Goal: Describe your environment, past experiences, and immediate needs.
Grammar: Passé Composé vs. Imparfait (past tenses); reflexive verbs (daily routines); relative pronouns (qui, que); partitive articles (du, de la).
Vocabulary: Shopping, health/body parts, weather, clothing, and simple work life.
Key Competencies:
Describing a past vacation.
Booking a hotel room or making an appointment.
Expressing simple opinions (likes/dislikes).
🟠 Level B1: Independent (The Traveler)
Goal: Maintain a conversation, deal with unexpected situations, and express abstract thoughts.
Grammar: Introduction to the Subjunctive (emotions/necessity); the Future tense; the Conditional (politeness/hypotheticals); use of y and en.
Vocabulary: Environment, media/news, professional life, and travel mishaps.
Key Competencies:
Expressing a point of view on a social issue.
Understanding the main points of a radio broadcast.
Writing a formal letter of complaint or a personal essay.
🔴 Level B2: Vantage (The Fluent Speaker)
Goal: Argue effectively, understand complex texts, and speak with spontaneity.
Grammar: Mastery of the Subjunctive; passive voice; complex logical connectors (bien que, malgré, afin que); nuances of the past (plus-que-parfait).
Vocabulary: Politics, technology, philosophy, and idiomatic expressions.
Key Competencies:
Synthesizing information from multiple sources.
Leading a debate or negotiation.
Identifying subtle nuances in tone or sarcasm in French media.
📚 Recommended Weekly Session Structure (3 Hours)
To ensure all four skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) are covered:
